HOW ASPHALT TONNAGE IS REALLY FIGURED
Tonnage is a density problem
Hot-mix asphalt weighs about 145 pounds per cubic foot compacted. Multiply your area by depth to get cubic feet, multiply by density to get pounds, then divide by 2,000 for tons. The calculator keeps the density adjustable because binder and surface mixes differ slightly.

- Area × depth × density ÷ 2,000 = tons

Compacted depth vs. loose depth
Asphalt compacts roughly 20–25% under the roller. A 3-inch finished mat starts as about 3.75 inches of loose material. Estimates should always be based on the compacted depth — the number on the plan — because density ratings already assume compaction.

Order for the paver, not the spreadsheet
Hot mix waits for no one: it has to be placed and rolled while it is still workable. Round tonnage up to the plant's minimum load, coordinate truck spacing with the crew, and never split a driveway into two pours a day apart if you can avoid it.
