Field Guide
BRICK MATH WITHOUT THE MASON'S NOTEBOOK
Bricks per square foot is the whole game
A standard modular brick with a 3/8-inch mortar joint covers about 6.85 per square foot — most estimators round to 7. Multiply wall area by the rate for your brick size, because queen, king and utility bricks all cover differently and the count swings by thousands on a big wall.
- Modular ≈ 7 bricks per sq ft
- Queen ≈ 5.8, King ≈ 5.3 per sq ft
- Joint thickness changes the rate
Mortar follows the brick count
Figure roughly three 70-lb bags of mortar per 100 bricks for typical joint sizes — about 30 bags per 1,000 bricks. Pre-blended Type N covers most above-grade residential work; Type S steps in for below-grade and structural applications.
- ≈ 3 bags mortar per 100 bricks
- Type N: general above-grade walls
- Type S: foundations and retaining
Waste, breakage and the block option
Add 5–10% for cuts, breakage and the inevitable dropped pallet corner. If the schedule matters more than the look, the same wall in 8×8×16 CMU block takes about 1.125 blocks per square foot — the calculator shows both counts side by side.
- 5–10% waste on brick
- ≈ 1.125 CMU blocks per sq ft
- Corners and openings add cuts
