CONCRETE MATH, FROM FORMS TO TRUCK

CH.01

Volume is length × width × depth

Concrete volume is simple multiplication with one trap: units. Slab thickness is measured in inches, everything else in feet. Convert thickness to feet, multiply the three dimensions for cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards — the unit ready-mix is sold in.

  • Convert inches to feet first (4 in = 0.333 ft)
  • Cubic feet ÷ 27 = cubic yards
  • Footings and columns use the same formula

Bags vs. ready-mix

One cubic yard of concrete takes about 45 bags of 80-lb mix or 60 bags of 60-lb mix. Bagged concrete makes sense up to roughly half a yard; beyond that, a ready-mix truck is cheaper, faster and far more consistent. The calculator shows both so you can decide on the spot.

The overage that saves the pour

Subgrades are never perfectly level, forms flex, and spillage happens. Order 5–10% extra on slabs and up to 15% on footings dug into uneven ground. Running short means a cold joint or an emergency short-load fee — both cost more than the extra half yard.
