How is overtime calculated for hourly workers?

Federally, hours past 40 in a workweek pay at least 1.5 times the regular rate. Someone working 44 hours at $28.50 earns 40 × $28.50 plus 4 × $42.75 — $1,311 gross. Some states add daily overtime rules on top of the weekly threshold.
