STRAW COVER, FROM SEED BEDS TO SLOPES
Two rates: blanket or armor
As a light blanket over fresh grass seed, one bale stretches 800–1,000 square feet — you want soil peeking through. For erosion control on bare slopes, coverage drops to about 400 square feet per bale, laid thick enough to hold against rain impact.

Straw, not hay — weed seeds matter
Straw is the stalk left after grain harvest — mostly hollow stems, few seeds. Hay is cut forage full of seed heads, and spreading it on a new lawn plants a weed farm. Buy certified weed-free straw for seed cover; the few extra dollars are cheaper than a summer of pulling.

Leave it — it feeds the soil
A light straw blanket decomposes in a season and becomes organic matter; there is no cleanup pass. Rake it only if it was laid too thick and smothers seedlings. On slopes, netting or tackifier over the straw keeps it in place until roots take over.
