HOW A ROOF TAKEOFF ACTUALLY WORKS
Start with the footprint
Every roofing estimate begins with area, and every roof plane is just a rectangle until proven otherwise. Measure each plane eave-to-ridge and rake-to-rake, or pull the building footprint and adjust for overhangs. Complex roofs — valleys, dormers, hips — get broken into simple planes and added together.

Pitch changes everything
A 1,176 sq ft footprint is not 1,176 sq ft of roof. Slope stretches the surface, and the steeper the pitch, the more material it takes to cover the same building. Multiply the footprint by the pitch factor before you order anything.

- 6/12 pitch — multiply by 1.118
- 8/12 pitch — multiply by 1.202
Squares, bundles and the waste rule
Roofing is sold in squares: one square covers 100 sq ft. Standard architectural shingles run three bundles per square. Then add waste — 10% for a simple gable, up to 15% for cut-up roofs with hips and valleys. The shingle calculator does the rounding up for you.
