PAVING ESTIMATES THE PLANT UNDERSTANDS
Square yards in, tons out
Paving starts with coverage: length times width gives area, and area times compacted depth gives volume. Multiply by the mix density — about 145 pounds per cubic foot — and divide by 2,000. That tonnage is the language the asphalt plant actually speaks.

Lifts: build depth in layers
Structural pavement goes down in lifts, not one thick mat. Two 2-inch lifts compact better than one 4-inch pour, and each lift's tonnage is figured separately. Driveways run one or two lifts; parking lots with truck traffic earn three.
- Driveways: 1–2 lifts, 2.5–4 in total
- Lots: 2–3 lifts over base
- Each lift compacts ~25%
Trucking keeps the paver honest
A standard tri-axle carries 15–20 tons of hot mix, and the paver should never stop waiting on a truck. The calculator converts tonnage into truckloads so you can stage deliveries — a stopped paver means cold seams and a rougher mat.
