MC360 // Wood & Lumber
THE WHOLE SHED,ONE MATERIAL LIST.
How much lumber do I need for a shed? A storage building is a hundred small decisions that all land on one purchase order. Enter length, width and wall height — the materials calculator returns the framing, sheathing, roofing and estimated cost as a single takeoff.

Field Guide
FROM SHED DIMENSIONS TO A FULL TAKEOFF
Framing counts follow the perimeter
Wall studs at 16 inches on center mean roughly one stud per linear foot of wall, plus corners, door and window headers, and double top plates. A 12×16 shed has 56 feet of wall — the stud count lands near 70 once every plate, cripple and trimmer is honestly counted.
- ≈ 1 stud per LF of wall @16″ OC
- Corners, headers, plates add 20%+
- Floor joists mirror the same spacing
Sheathing is area ÷ 32
Wall and roof sheathing comes in 4×8 sheets — 32 square feet each. Wall area divided by 32 gives the sheet count, then the roof adds its own planes. OSB for the budget build, plywood where moisture lurks. The calculator lists walls, roof and floor separately.
- 1 sheet = 32 sq ft of coverage
- Walls + roof + floor counted apart
- OSB vs. plywood per exposure
Roofing and the cost roll-up
A shed roof is a small roofing job: squares of shingles, underlayment, drip edge and felt, all computed from the same pitch math as a house. Every line rolls into an estimated material cost so the build-vs-buy decision happens with real numbers, not a hunch.
- Roof = same squares math as a house
- Underlayment and drip edge included
- Full cost estimate per takeoff
