BALES, COVERAGE AND THE SOUTHERN STANDARD
Coverage is the whole calculation
A standard square bale of longleaf pine straw covers 40–50 square feet at a fresh 2–3 inch depth — call it 45 for estimating. Divide bed area by coverage and round up. Slash pine bales run looser and cover a bit less per bale.

Why pine straw owns the South
Pine straw stays put on slopes where bark mulch floats away, acidifies soil gently for azaleas and camellias, and costs less per square foot than bagged mulch in pine country. It is also lighter — one person can spread a bale in minutes.

Refresh, don't bury
Pine straw compacts and fades to gray within months — that is normal, not failure. Top up with a thin fresh layer once or twice a year to restore color and depth instead of stripping beds. Old needles break down into the soil on their own.
