FROM ROOM DIMENSIONS TO A FINISHING LIST
Measure walls and ceiling separately
Wall area is the room's perimeter times ceiling height; the ceiling is simply length times width. Add them for total coverage, then subtract only the largest openings — standard doors and windows are usually left in the estimate to absorb cutting waste.
- Walls = perimeter × ceiling height
- Ceiling = length × width
- Standard openings offset cut waste
Sheet size is a labor decision
A 4×8 sheet covers 32 square feet; a 4×12 covers 48 and produces fewer butt joints — the hardest seams to finish. Longer sheets mean less taping and faster finishing, but they are heavier to hang and harder to get into the room. The sheetrock calculator prices both options.

Mud, tape and screws scale with sheets
Everything downstream follows the sheet count: roughly 32 screws per sheet, about one five-gallon bucket of joint compound per 500 square feet for three-coat finishing, and tape footage that tracks total seam length. Get the sheets right and the rest of the list writes itself.
