How much siding do I need? Like roofing, vinyl siding sells by the square — 100 square feet per box count. Enter wall dimensions, subtract openings, add gables and waste, and walk into the supplier with squares and trim footage already figured.

Field Guide

SIDING SQUARES, GABLES AND TRIM — FIGURED

CH.01

Walls are perimeter × height

Measure around the house and multiply by wall height for gross wall area, then subtract window and door openings. Siding is sold in squares of 100 square feet, typically two squares per box. The math is friendly — the openings list is where estimates usually slip.

  • Gross area = perimeter × height
  • Subtract windows and doors
  • 1 square = 100 sq ft of siding
CH.02

Gables are triangles — don't skip them

Each gable end adds half its base times its height. A 24-foot gable with a 6-foot rise adds 72 square feet per end. Two-story and cross-gabled homes stack several — measure each one, because gables routinely hide 15% of a siding order.

  • Gable area = base × height ÷ 2
  • Count every gable end separately
  • Dormers count as small gables
CH.03

Trim is a second order of its own

J-channel frames every window, door and wall top; starter strip runs the full perimeter; inside and outside corners run full height. Add 10% waste to the siding squares and list trim pieces in linear feet — the calculator keeps both on one sheet.

  • J-channel: around every opening
  • Starter strip = house perimeter
  • 10% waste on squares
