CRUSHED STONE, FROM AREA TO AXLE WEIGHT
Yards first, then tons
Stone starts as volume: area times depth gives cubic feet, divided by 27 gives cubic yards. The quarry sells by weight, so multiply by the material's density — crushed stone runs about 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard depending on rock type and moisture.
- Area × depth ÷ 27 = cubic yards
- ≈ 1.35 tons per cu yd (typical)
- Wet stone weighs more — order by volume mind-set
Compaction is not optional
Loose stone compacts 10–15% under the plate compactor or roller. If the plan calls for a 4-inch compacted base, you are really placing closer to 4.5 inches of loose material. The calculator adds the compaction factor so the finished depth lands where the plan says.

ABC, crusher run or #57?
ABC (aggregate base course) and crusher run contain fines that lock together under compaction — the right choice under driveways and slabs. Clean #57 stone has no fines and drains freely, making it the pick for drainage beds and behind retaining walls. Same math, different density.
