How do I calculate how much lumber I need?

How many board feet of lumber are in a wall?

A quick framing rule: about one board foot of studs per square foot of wall at 16-inch spacing, plus plates and headers. A 100 sq ft wall runs 100–130 board feet of framing before sheathing enters the list.

What is the formula for board feet of lumber?

Thickness in inches × width in inches × length in feet ÷ 12. A 2×6 ten feet long is 10 board feet; a 1×8 twelve feet long is 8. The lumber calculator applies the formula to every line of your list.

How is lumber priced — per piece or per board foot?

BOARD FEET: THE LUMBER INDUSTRY'S CURRENCY

CH.01

The formula in one line

One board foot is a piece of wood one inch thick, twelve inches wide and one foot long. The formula: thickness (inches) × width (inches) × length (feet) ÷ 12. A 2×4 eight feet long is 2 × 4 × 8 ÷ 12 = 5.33 board feet — regardless of what the yard calls it.

Nominal vs. actual — the hardwood trap

Dimensional softwood sells by the piece using nominal names (a 2×4 is really 1.5×3.5). Rough hardwood sells by the true board foot using actual quarter-inch thickness — 4/4, 5/4, 8/4. Mixing the two systems is the most expensive mistake at the lumber counter.

Price per thousand
